1993 Ford F150 SVT Lightning Test Drive

The early 1990’s saw pickup truck sales rise, due to the increase in using them as personal, everyday vehicles. Fuel was relatively inexpensive, and most found the extra height offered in trucks, and SUV’s a benefit to traversing urban life. Couple those factors, with the also increasing budget performance vehicles, and you have a hybrid of sort that some say was initiated by GMC’s Syclone, and Typhoon twins. Chevrolet later engaged the field with its full-size, C/K based 454SS, that proved thirsty, luckily in a cheap petrol period.

By the time GM euthanized both its compact all-wheel-drive duo around 1992, and the full-size fighter in 1993, Ford was ready, and released it’s combatant as the solo soldier in the potent pickup field, with the 1993 Ford F150 SVT Lightning. It proved to be more than a muscle car, big engine transplant, decal special like the Chev. While it did bear the latter, being struck with Lightning stickers, it was also furnished with the obligatory air dam, fog lights, larger for the era aluminum wheels with performance tread, and an upgraded interior, that looks like was fitted with the best seats I have ever seen in a truck by then! Performance enhancements included GT40 based free flowing cylinder heads, and less restrictive exhaust, increasing HP by 40, and Torque by the same figure. Ford obviously found the right formula in the SVT Lightning, as it continued the project through 2004. Let us watch how it performed new, in the video below!
