1990 Mazda MX-5 Miata Test Drive
With the MX5, Mazda proved to the other big car manufacturers of the world that small, relatively cheap sportscars could be built in large numbers again profitably. Not for the first time, the company had an important and worthwhile lesson to teach the rest of the industry. Five or six years after its introduction, many European makes, were back in the running with small reasonably affordable roadsters inspired by the success of the little Mazda. No one can deny that the MX5 had had a huge impact on the market and the development of its Euro classmates.
Its designers looked at the Lotus Elan for inspiration when creating the 1990 Miata, although it was always intended to be a much more durable machine that the fragile Lotus. This was a sportscar for people who were used to the comforts of modern sedans – a car with a proper heater, impeccable weather protection and a comfortable ride.
