Yes, the 600SEC cost a great deal of money, and no, it was not the threefold improvement over, for example, a Lexus coupe that the price suggested. But the cost/benefit ratio didn’t pose much of a purchase obstacle for the people who seriously considered this Benz. Those who resided in the loftiest levels of societies were well accustomed to paying a lot more money to receive incremental improvements in quality and luxury. That is how quality works in all things after all. The farther up the scale you push, the progressively greater the cost. The 600SEC sat at the top of that quality curve, delivering a level of splendid extravagance unavailable in lesser cars.
