1971 AMC Gremlin Test Drive

In the 40 year plus history of the American small car, it would be safe to say that success in that category has been very recent. Americas answer to Volkswagens entry into our market with the Beetle, included Ford’s Pinto, and Chevrolets Vega. To put it mildly, AMC’s reply to the subcompact class when compared to its domestic rivals, in a word was expressive. However when stacked up aesthetically to the VW, the Gremlins appearance could be considered just as polarizing. Today, the American small car is arguably, finally on top compared to the current Asian adversaries, with cars as compeling as the Cruze, and Focus. It took us 40 plus years to do it, but lets have a brief look at the begining of USA’s small car fight!
