Since the Hornet was discontinued, the AMX stood alone at AMC as the corporation’s sporty image car. the 1978 AMX had all new front sheet metal, with a slightly ‘wedgie’ nose complete with blackout grille and circular turn indicators, and it shared rear end treatment with the Concord hatchback. The AMX appearance goodie list was also revised somewhat. Standard AMX power was from a 258cid 2-bbl six, unless you lived in California or at high altitude, where you must order the optional 304cid 2-bbl V-8. Although a 4-speed manual gearbox was standard on the low altitude 49 state car, the V-8 must be ordered with 3-speed torque command automatic.
