1980 Mercury Cougar XR7 Commercial
Lincoln-Mercury’s banner carrier in the personal-car segment came in at only 3200 pounds for 1980 after a complete redesign. Increased interior and trunk space highlighted the new envelope, and raised front-seat positions altered the whole driving feel of the car. Only one 2-door coupe model was offered, but there were several appearance option groups encompassing three different roof trims and 2-tone paint schemes. All Cougars were V8s, with the de-bored 255cid engine as base equipment and the 302cid optional. All of the downsizing steps taken together yielded highway mileage of 20. Production was way down in the recession year, to 58,028 units.
