For 1981 Pontiac issued the tiny T1000, but customers failed to flock to showroom. A challenge for Pontiac, considering to them everyone bought small cars. Not just the young, not just students, and not just first time buyers, but people looking for more than just fuel economy. The Tiny ‘T’ was supposedly efficient and economical, with an EPA rating of 28MPG with the manual transmission, A current generation Corvette would not even be jealous. But, the T came with a special look, a look so distinctive, you only notice it when you look at it because it shared its entire body stampings with the Chevette. My favorite claim, is that they allege the T1000 as a drivers car, with impressive ride and handling, but the impression was obviously not a good first one. Pontiac’s ‘neat’ smaller sized car, with giant size features was for penny pincher’s, too bad all the penny pincher’s worked for Pontiac with this effort.
My Wife and I had a 1981 Pontiac T1000 from 1992 until Fall of 1996 when I hit a deer! I was driving our T1000 82 miles round daily it was very good on gas! My Wife had just bought a 1996 Eagle Talon and gave me her old car 1990 Plymouth Laser. I still have that 1981 T1000 needs grille and repair or replace hood don’t know why l kept it?
I’d love to fix up that car. I was born Dec ’81. My dad had a little red T1000 for many years. It seemed like it just kept going! Now, I have an ’05 Grand Prix that is sentimental and I’m trying to preserve it. I wonder how much of my fondness for Pontiac is rooted in the memories of Dad’s little red car.
Wow, those MPG numbers sure don’t seem that impressive. No wonder Honda’s were so popular back then.
