1987 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 Test Drive

The Jeep Corporation was the best thing happening to AMC in 1987. Its products demonstrated style, clever packaging, and a growing respect among non-off-roaders as the kind of vehicle ready for the road in whatever shape the road assumed.  They were weather worthy, essentially unstoppable, and , for 1987, Jeeps in most versions achieved new heights of effectiveness with the power and torque virtuosity of American Motors new 4-liter inline six.

This clearly was AMC/Jeep’s claim to fame for 1987. The increased horsepower and torque also boosted Cherokee and Wagoneer maximum trailer towing capacity to an impressive 5000 lb.  Fuel economy for an engine with this sort of bawdy heft was better than average too.
