1987 Suzuki Samurai JX Test Drive
The Samurai is a mini-jeep made by Suzuki, which was joined by the larger Sidekick in 1989, a similarly styled vehicle that was (ironically) more refined, and more expensive. It comes as a cute looking, if rather stubby convertible, or as a long chassis with a thermoplastic top. With solid axles and leaf springs front and rear, it’s concept was hardly modern, bouncing easily at highway speeds. The engine is a 4-cylinder 1.3 liter with 64hp and a 5-speed manual transmission, inducing the virtue of patience when piloting this slow performer. The Samurai was cute, still is actually, but its lack of sophistication and comfort really restricted its use.

The Suzuki Sidekick was the Geo Tracker.
Why oh why doesn’t Suzuki or one of the other Japanese manufacturers provide us w/ a modern-day equivalent of this rig. LOVE these little, yet very capable off-road rigs. Can you believe these weigh less than 2,100 lbs!? Yes, they did have their shortcomings (not enough power, gearing too low for highway cruising, too noisy, so-so mpg, rust problems), which were fixed somewhat by their successors (Tracker and Sidekicks), yet the cool look was compromised with the updates. If you find a specimen in good condition still, a 1.6 VW turbo-diesel swap (mpg in the high 30’s) is the way to go!
