1988 Porsche 911 Carrera Test Drive

Porsche’s coupes were almost unique in having their engines behind the rear axle, not ahead of it as in the med engined cars. At the time, besides Frances Alpine, the only high performance car to keep its engine in the tail was the evergreen flat six engined Porsche 911, born in 1964 and seeming to be set to continue well into the future. Although the concept of concentrating the weight at the very back of the chassis seemed to be a recipe for disaster for a powerful car (seen in the pendulum action in the video), a combination of well designed suspension and wide tires has made the Porsche a perfectly acceptable road car, though not a forgiving one to the novice.

Gee, I never would have expected a car 5 years newer and with more horsepower AND torque to out accelerate the 911 😉
