1989 Mitsubishi Mirage Turbo Test Drive

Look out, Honda, you had some real competition. The second generation Mitsubishi Mirage was the best subcompact to come down the road since, well, the Civic.  It had that same winning combination of fun and function plus a few new curves and wrinkles that should have put it on everyone’s small car shopping list. The rounded , aerodynamic 2-door hatchback featured a very contemporary low nose, long hood and roof wedge shape which was longer, wider and a good deal roomier inside than its predecessor.  Under the hood there was a brand new 1.5 liter 4- cylinder that produced 81-horsepower, up form 68 in 1988, and a healthy 135 hp in the 16-valve twin cam Turbo version .The Turbo had a more powerful and lower torque range which produced 0-60 mph sprints in just around 8-seconds and didn’t peak until 7000 rpm’s. Add to that a tuned suspension and 14-inch high performance Yokohama tires that gripped the road with the best in class.
