This 2+2 sports coupe was not derived from any other model in the BMW lineup. This was the flagship model for the company, designed to offer an alternative to vehicles such as the Mercedes Benz 500SL and Porsche 928 S4. In one unusual move, BMW announced the price of their car several months before it went on sale, a heady $73,600. that made it just a hair less expensive than the Porsche, and virtually the same price as the Mercedes Benz 300SL, although somewhat more considerable $10k under the 500SL. The 12-cylinder engine was the same that existed in the BMW 750iL. It put out 296 horsepower and more than 330 foot pounds of torque, enough to accelerate rapidly even in a car that weighed more than two tons.
