1991 Chevrolet Caprice Classic Station Wagon Preview & Test Drive

Growing up, we never had the obligatory wagon, nor a minivan, perhaps that is because there was only my brother and I, and thus we always had coupes. However, my friends had them, in the proper order of politically correctness! I recall riding in the back of said wagons, facing the people following you, making faces, waving or making ‘handy’ gestures at them as if they were drivers of large 18-wheelers and all you wanted was a honk in return! When Chevrolet introduced the new for 91 sedan, it was mocked as being whale like in appearance, however i think the station wagon version far more mimics the look of that mammal! With the aero looks of Fords Taurus, and Audi’s 5000 wagon, the Caprice simply took those cues and grew them by 50 percent creating an almost hearse size vehicle. Ford redesigned its competing Crown Vic the following year, eliminating their wagon version, leaving the Caprice, and the other GM stable mates in a class by themselves!

Although I’ve never owned, driven, or ridden in this generation Chevy Caprice, I’ve always liked this generation Caprice. It’s modern enough to keep up with the times, but it’s still front-engine, rear-wheel drive. while most cars of its class have gone front-wheel drive.

Although minivans have their place for those who need/want them, I believe there are those (myself included) who would appreciate a full-sized American station wagon.
