11995 Volkswagen GTI VR6 Test Drive
When it launched its first Golf GTI in1983, Volkswagen revived the good old days of Britain’s Austin Coopers, little powerhouses on four wheels known for their subtle high performance capabilities. While not very spectacular looking , between traffic lights, it was very easy tor these modest subcompacts to leave many a sports car in their dust. Volkswagen’s supremacy in this market segment had waned in the early 90’s with the Japanese industry’s introduction of several models specifically designed to compete with the GTI. The German make intended to win back its leading position with the revamped GTI and the new for 1995 GTI and the super VR6 already featured on other models. Despite positive additions to the body and to equipment , driveability still wasn’t up to par. The car provided strong acceleration, but its top speed was electronically limited to 115mph. Other faults included a steering system that was too light and a suspension too soft.
