The past forty years have seen a tremendous growth in the highway network all over the world. Yet, ironically, they have also seen an increase in the number of motorists who want to get away from roads altogether, either in pursuit of sport of just to escape from the common herd. And for every one who actually drove their off-roader across country, there were at least two who like to look as if they did.
