1978: All-New Mustang topped the 1979 Excitement list for Ford
The excitement centered around the 1979 Ford Mustang (with no Roman numerals), and an all-new car to replace the present Mustang II, was the vibe around Dearborn in middle 1978.
Word was new car would actually be larger and roomier than the current model which was certainly a switch from the way things had been going. The wheelbase was supposed to fall somewhere in between that of the Mustang II and the Fairmont, which would put it around 100 in. The suspension pieces and floor pan of the new car were reported to be based on the ones developed for the Fairmont, which bodes well for naturally good handling and lightweight. It’ll be produced in both hardtop notchback and hatchback models, and the doors would be large for easier rear seat access.
