1978: The XP-903 Project
The XP-903 project was the name given to the development effort of General Motors planned new generation of front wheel drive sedans, coupes and sporty cars. The models Illustrated here would be the forerunners of the greatly changed GM lineup in the US and worldwide.

The first car to hit the market, around 1981, was scheduled to be a 2-door hatchback mini in the manner of the Renault R5 and Ford Fiesta. Inside, front and rear space was impressive, the dash was simple and functional. Rumors it would come initially w/ a 1.1, or 1.2L are interesting, but mounting it transversely and driving the front wheels, less so, as that was the trend. Overall length was suggested to be around 136 in with a wheelbase of 88.2 in.

Next would be the 2-door hatchback on a longer wheelbase, rather like the VW Rabbit. The front section was identical to the minis, but the back was not so steep and provided more interior space. Clearly replacing the Chevette lineup.

Eventually, a notchback version was to be introduced, replacing the Opel Isuzu (and Kadett in Europe). Again the front section appears to be the same as the minis with a slight modifications, but no doubt a larger four-cylinder engine would be fitted inside. Finally, a spider version was planned on a limited production basis. While once again using the identical front section, the rest of the car could have received all new body panels.

These saw production in Europe in 1982 as the Opel Corsa and Vauxhall Nova, and stayed in production a full decade. No spider, but they did add four-door versions of both the hatchback and sedan starting a couple years in.
