Dodge vans got a completely new grille, headlight and front end styling treatment for 1979. Grilles go full width across the truck, as did outside hood surfaces, to facilitate servicing and tune-ups, and there were fewer parts under the skin to complicate servicing.  For the first time in the industry, diesel power was available in vans as Dodge expanded use of the 243cid Mitsubishi diesel 4-cylinder engine to all 1979 van models.  Standard engine was the 225cid gasoline 6-cylinder with 1-barrel carburetor.  The 318 and 360cid V-8 engines were standard on some models and optional on others as GVW went up the scale, and air1979-Dodge-Van3 conditioning was available on 6-cylinder vans.  Standard transmission was a 3-seed manual, with a heavy-duty 3-speed, 4-speed manual overdrive, and automatic transmissions optional.  The line was composed of 100, 200, 300 series in 109- and 127-inch wheelbases, with Maxi version having an additional 22 inches of body length.  Van and window van (Royal Sportsman and Royal Sportsman SE version, up to 15 passengers) had expanded option lists for 1979, including 7-position tilt steering wheel, all-door power locking, and electric rear window defrosters on some single-rear door models.
