1979: Downsizing German Style
The downsizing trend was not the exclusive province of Detroit, seen here with what was considered to be the 1982 W201 new compact range. The W201 would continue with conventional front engine/rear drive arrangement beneath the body panels that reflected a mixture of contemporary 280 styling and the next S-class cars. The wedge shape would have been even more pronounced with a steeply raked windshield adding to the effect, while the formal rear cut-off would have added to the rear seat head room.
