01979: Ford’s Next Pinto Gets Escorted Into the 1980’s
Ford’s replacement for the Pinto was scheduled for introduction in 1981. the new model would be Ford’s first U.S-built front-wheel-drive car and would feature a transverse-mounted 1.3-liter 4-cylinder engine that was designed in Dearborn and developed in England. A 1.6-liter version of the four and the 2.8-liter V-6 were rumored to be options. Body styles included a 3-door hatchback, and a station-wagon; a 4-door notchback was under study but not definitive for the U.S. market when these images were composed. It was obviously released for the 1982 model year.
