The object of GM’s first complete downsizing program was the B/C body. Most of the fuel mileage gains at the time resulted from just making the cars smaller and lighter. Reluctant to shrink the exterior much further and thus lose interior space, GM considered reducing the wheelbase length and maintain current width. Further mileage gains would have to involve mechanical advances and aerodynamic refinements. Considering the decade premature before release, styling exercise, they weren’t far off from a styling standpoint, with the doors that wrapped into the roof, flush glass, semi-fastback styling and lower, tapered noses.
