In 1979, Zephyr and its twin, Fairmont, were Ford’s new compact cars. In a year or two, their dimensions were similar to those of the company’s full-size cars. That’s how quickly changes were being made between old and new in auto designs. Unfortunately, Zephyr, like Fairmont, was already beginning to show its age. Ordinarily, a newly designed chassis would be expected to continue in production, unchanged under the skin for a decade or more. But the following year would be the car’s last year in production, with the smaller, front-drive compact Topaz planned as its replacement for 1984.
