1982: Tomorrow’s Vans Yesterday
It was 1982 and the Big Three U.S. car-makers were getting ready to introduce their new-generation vans in the in a few years. Large vans were projected to continue in production until demand dwindled to a phase out level. The General Motors version was expected to be an 8-passenger bus/utility vehicle, perhaps based on the X-car powertrain: Engines ranging from a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder to a 3.0-liter V-6. Front-wheel drive layout, rumored for all three design proposals, though the end result differed initially, meant efficient use of interior space within considerably smaller exterior dimensions. The Ford Econoline Van/bus was planned as a 8-passenger, and thought to be planned around Escort/Lynx components. Chrysler’s entry was officially based on the K-car. All three renderings appeared to be thought to have a rear hinged door.
