1983 AMC Model Lineup Updates

1983’s headline item at AMC was the Kenosha constructed Franco-American Alliance series.  The increasing importance of the firms tie-up with Renault was noticeable in the diminishing model offerings of the AMC passenger car lines.  The first indication that AMC’s primary emphasis would be on Renault engineered product came in 1982 when the Spirit sedan was discontinued during the early months. A few weeks later the Eagle version of the Spirit sedan, the Eagle SX/4 Kammback joined its Gremlin derived cousin in automotive history.
After this minor blood letting, the AMC lineup for 1983 was slimmed down in the powerplant department.  No longer was the 2.5 liter Pontiac supplied 4-cylinder engine be offered in the Spirit and Concord.  For these lines AMC’s 258 cid six was the only engine available.  The venerable inline powerplant was given an infusion of 80s technology with the addition of an ignition controlling knock sensor and a feedback 2-bbl carburetor.

AMC’s Jeep line was refined with Select Trak offered across the board.  CJ-5 model offerings were slimmed down to include the base and Renegade versions only. The CJ-7 was available in Laredo and Limited styles in addition to a base model.  The Scrambler pickup was offered in both base and Laredo.  The big Jeeps (Cherokee, Wagoneer, and J-series pickups) were offered in various trim levels, from base, Chief, Laredo, Honcho, Brougham, and Limited.  The Cherokee 2-and 4-door station wagons, featured  an all new Pioneer model.
