The Honda Accord brand was founded in 1976 in Tokyo, Japan, by the Honda Motor Company.  The American Honda Motor Company, a wholly owned subsidiary, introduced the Accord to the United States as a subcompact in 1976. For the 1983 model year, the Accord was redesigned as a mid-sized sedan and became the first Japanese car manufactured in the United States.

    Likely, the Honda Accord was the first Japanese/American vehicle to have shoulder safety belts in the rear, as well as up front. That started in 1982. Several European car companies began safety advancements at least a decade earlier.
