Volkswagen would correct an important flaw in the MK1 Jetta by adding some length to the wheelbase for 1984. The result would be more leg room for rear-seat passengers, without reducing the large trunk space. There would be less rear overhang and a higher rear deck lid. The Jetta’s styling would also be altered, with softer lines to improve aerodynamics. The front end would also help in this regard by being made slightly lower and wider, and the windshield would be given somewhat more rake. For the first time, a station wagon was being considered.
