1984: Buick cracks the whip on its Riata

Buick’s sporty 2-seat sporty car Reatta, was to come in at less than $20k.  Developed under the GM-33 program title, the 2-place coupe fit neatly between the Pontiac Fiero and Chevrolet Corvette in GM’s pricing structure.  Built on a 99.5 in wheelbase, the Reatta used the same components , including front and rear suspension from the Riviera. Reports also swirled that after its 1987 introduction, a turbocharged version of the 3.8L six was to be added. While the base transmission was the ubiquitous 4-cog auto overdrive, a GM-Getrag 5-speed manual was also planned as a no cost option.

Another one I remember. The funny part: It did share a lot of parts with Riviera and other GM E Bodies. I know parts of the suspension are from the Oldsmobile Toronado. It never got the supercharged 3800 V6. None of the E Bodies did even though they should have. I never understood why this car and the Allante’ were not sharing parts or on the same platform.
