1984 Dodge 600ES Turbo Test Drive

When was a mainstream family sedan not a mainstream family sedan?  When it was the Jekyll and Hyde 600ES Turbo.

The heart and soul of the Dodge 600ES Turbo was unquestionably located under the hood.  This same engine/transaxle also resided in the high-tech Chrysler Laser and Dodge Daytona, and at this point in time was the ultimate K-car engine.  Rated at 142 hp at 5600 rpm and 160 lb-ft of torque at 3600 rpm, it was the model of smooth turbo power.  At full throttle, manifold pressure went positive (boost) at a very low 1500 rpm, and built to its maximum 7.5 psi at maximum allowable engine speed of 6000.  The specification, however, did not tell the entire story.  This turbo/engine system provided the sensation of a larger displacement engine, and was one of the most usable applications of this approach to extracting a quart of go from a pint container.
