If ever there was a car that fell through the cracks of the compact car buyer in 1985, it was the Dodge Colt Premier. Built in Japan by Mitsubishi, but marketed in the U.S only by Dodge. That is too bad, because the Colt Premier was a pretty compelling automobile. Set up with the identical powerplant and suspension as the Mirage Turbo, the Premier was a stealth sedan with true high performance numbers. It had nearly identical lateral and straight-line acceleration numbers as its hatchback brother, and comparable braking. The extra tail section and additional curb weight, however, seemed to damp some of the squirreliness that was evident in the Mirage’s transient response and stability.
With four doors, excellent handling, crisp power steering and more interior room, the Colt Premier was more than a Mirage with a trunk.
