01986 Audi 5000CS Quattro Test Drive
The Audi 5000S was the standard bearer for cars over $15,000. It went from boxy to one of the slickest looking bodies to come out of the wind tunnel and go into production. It claimed the lowest drag coefficient of any sedan sold here at 0.33. The lack of wind noise inside was positively eerie. There were complaints about a lack of power from the base 100-hp 2.1-liter 5-cylinder engine. The base car, which appeared in mid-summer ’85, was joined by the turbo version with 140-hp, and the special suspension, brakes, wheels, and tires to go with the added oomph. According to Motor Trend, it was a three-way tie for Best Buy over $15,000: The Audi 5000 S, the Saab Turbo, and Mercedes Benz 190E.
