1986 Buick Lesabre Coupe Test Drive

We’ve seen this car before; 1676 to be exact.  Full-sized, 6-passenger Detroit iron.  Decade-old styling with sloping roofline, big taillights, whitewalls with wire wheel covers (non sporty model), three miles of chrome accent stripping, and that impressive double headlight grille.  Plush interior with power everything, a massive, stratified dash where instruments don’t look like instruments, column shifter, and wire thin steering wheel. Yeah, we’ve seen this car before.

But, wait.  Something’s wrong here.  This ca’r rear suspension is fully independent.  There’s no rear differential  Holy hardware, this thing’s a front-driver. Check under the front hinged hood.  Oh, terrific.  Not only has the V8 lost two cylinders, the damn thing’s mounted sideways.  Where’s the carburetor?  And those are struts , not shocks.  A closer examination of the exterior reveals small touches, aerodynamic low drag contouring. And it weighed only 3100 pounds.  What gives 1986-buick-lesabre1here?
What’s wrong with the 1986 Buick Lesabre coupe, is what’s right. An interior that is almost as spacious for six as before. Tider handling, accompanied by increased fuel economy, all in a smaller package. A full-sized coupe designed not to be written off for its gas-guzzling appetite, lumbering handling, high maintenance costs, and low tech approach to engineering.  Not only was it downsize, it was a pleasant surprise.
