XJ40 was the code-name for this generation of XJ saloons, which had been under development at Jaguar since the early 1970’s yet only came to fruition in 1986. During that time significant development took place to ensure better build quality and component reliability and to develop the design and technology befitting a Jaguar of the lat 1980’s and 1990’s.
The XJ6 gained a strong reputation over the years and so, despite the fact that the XJ40 was essentially a brand new model, Jaguar obtained to retain the old model name XJ6. The car’s shape followed the maxim ‘evolution not revolution’ although its lines were generally more squared up.
Although only in production for some eight years, the XJ40 moved Jaguar further forward in the luxury car sector and a grand total of 208,672 models were produced.
