1987 Pontiac Fiero GT Test Drive

It’s too bad the word convertible has already been taken up in the description of cars with fold down tops because, in another sense, it would be almost the perfect word to describe the Pontiac Fiero. With its steel underbody, replaceable plastic skin panels and various drivetrain options, you might say the Fiero is the complete convertible: it can be made into just about anything from a vanilla plain commuter to a hard charging sports car, so long as the basic layout is left as a mid engine two seater. when Pontiac engineers designed the Fiero, they left the door open for some pretty substantial changes in its look and character. And a good thing too.
