1988: Could this have been the 1990 Escort?

Should Ford have replaced the Escort subcompact and Mercury the Mazda inspired Tracer with a form of this car? Uh, yeah! The vehicle was code named the CT20, and talk was this was the replacement for the 1990 Ford Escort. The version sold as the Mercury Tracer was told to have a significant sheet-metal variation from the Escort. Tracer entered the Mercury lineup in 1987 when the division dropped the Lynx Escort clone.  As with Tracer, Mazda was involved in the development of the CT20.

That sketch looks amazing but it looks like the AMC Pacer! I’m glad that Ford Motor Company stuck with the small Taurus, Mazda-based styling.
