71988 Mercedes Benz 300CE Test Drive
These class 7 rear wheel drive deluxe sedans and coupe were launched in 1984in Europe and the following year in North America. The TD wagon and the 260E date from 1986 and the 300CEfrom 1987. They are made in Germany at Sindelfingen near Stuttgart. The quality of materials, assembly and finish combined with its engineering and level of performance make the Mercedes 300 one of the best cars in the category. Unfortunately, it is very expensive.
They are still somewhat expensive, if you want a good one that hasn’t been either driven to death or turned into a boyracer car by some 20ish youth, plus they are not that common, so scarcity keeps the prices up.
Fun fact, I have the same lever-spring system for the ashtray on my BMW E32, so I guess this was kind of state of the art back then for luxury cars.
The pillarless coupes from Mercedes are a timeless classic design. My 1989 300CE is most definitely a rewarding car to drive and own. Nice examples of these cars don’t come around very often.
would love to see a b-pillar-less coupe today…..if it could pass our side impact requirements that is!
They do. The current E-class coupe is a IIHS Top Safety pick with the pillarless design.
yes, forgive me, i also saw on autoline daily today, the CL550 also has them!
