Mainstay of the Mercedes-Benz line were the 300 series cars, which included everything from coupes to station wagons. Somewhat hidden in the middle of all this was a sedan and a wagon that looked like the others in the showroom but wore the “4Matic” badge on their right rear corners. All the rest was pure 300, proud, upright exterior design, fine workmanship, legendary chassis, but built into the drivetrain was the most sophisticated of the all-wheel-drive systems, on that employed a computer to silently shift the system from 2WD and through three different levels of 4WD, sending the power to the correct axle whenever traction slipped away.
