Mercury upgraded the appearance of the compact Topaz 4-door models with new skins to make the cars look bigger. Grilles, hoods, fenders, doors, quarter panels and taillights were more rounded while the overall dimensions remained the same as the 1987s. The glass in the back window area was more upright, which gave a longer appearance to the trunk and balanced the front and rear of the car when viewed in profile. Automatic seatbelts that motored into position when the door was closed were now standard on Topaz. Multipoint fuel injection upped power to 98, from 86.
We had a 1991 copy of the Mercury Topaz. I inherited it from my mother after she retired (for the second time!). It should have been a clue that none of my other siblings wanted the car, I lived far from home at the time and had no idea of the service record it was racking up. It was not the most reliable car and had some pretty glaring flaws, but it was a comfortable little boat that I really wanted to like.
