The Maxima was a styling brick, far from sleek or contemporary. But it was a handsome brick and sold very well, thank you, presumably to the same sorts of yuppie types who coveted equally unstylish Volvos and BMW’s. Inside its squared-off nose resides a modern overhead-cam V-6, a version of the one that motivated the 300ZX sports car, mounted transversely and driving the front wheels through a choice of 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transaxle. New for 1988 optional suede leather upholstery for the SE 4-door and a ‘supersonic’ electronically controlled suspension.
