1988: Nissan’s Z32; 4WD Speculated?
It was 1988, and in one year Nissan would launch the new 300ZX with entirely new sheetmetal and underpinnings. Said one Nissan engineer of the Z32 “it will be a real sports car rather than the fat and and flashy hatchback that is currently in our showrooms. It has an exhaust not that sounds like a Ferrari. The idea was to get back to the feel of the 240Z.” Its rear suspension will be a unique five-link affair that featured diagonal A-arms. The same suspension that was slated for all of Nissan’s rear-wheel drive cars and the one that debuted on the 240SX. Introduced as a coupe, and followed by a 2+2, and later the twin turbo coupe. The turbo version distinguished by twin NAA ducts on the hood, was projected and confirmed 300 hp. With that much motivation for the top-of-the-line 300ZX, four wheel drive was thought to be a strong possibility, and Nissan’s Super HICAS 4WS was speculated and confirmed.
