Chevrolet called its Toyota hybrid the Nova, so perhaps it was fitting that Pontiac reached back into its name closet and applied LeMans to the subcompact it imported from Korea in 1988. LeMans, of course was the name of a succession of mid-sized Pontiacs dating from the early 1960s. More interesting than the name was the car, a thinly disguised version of the Opel Kadett. In Europe, the Kadett earned quite a name for itself, so the invasion in the American market was highly anticipated. The LeMans was built by the Korean conglomerate Daewoo, and would become Pontiac’s price leader.
