1988: Was Gen 2 Pontiac 6000 Going to be a 4-Door Only GM10?
Pontiac and the CPC Group sources identified the photograph from which this illustration was drawn as the 6000 STE, the GM10 model of what may was talked up to be Pontiac’s best sedan. Though the engineering was only lightly disguised at the time this was composed, it wore few of the hang on dress ups that was to distinguish an STE from the Grand Prix SE.
When Pontiac put the AWD components under the A-body 6000 STE in 1988, it configured the hard points for minimum fuss in a technology transfer tot the GM10/W-body line. With an existing 3.1-liter V-6, and pending options for the QUad 4 H.O. or Quad 4 Turbo, there was no lacking of power for the engine bay. GM10s with AWD and upward of 185 sounds like marketing war drums, doesn’t it?

I often wondered why they did not merge the 6000 and Grand Prix lines or keep Grand Prix rear drive with new styling. I know there was a Grand Prix STE. Pontiac Excitement indeed…
