1988: Was Pontiac’s Experimental OHC 2.5 liter four, an Alternative to the Quad 4?

Caught under test in a handful of Pontiac 6000STE’s and five-speed Fieros, was this experimental 2.5-liter OHC four-cylinder engine.  The word in Detroit was that this CPC powerplant was a heavily modified Tech4 Iron Duke that easily produced 145 bhp w/ a 9.3:1 compression ratio and larger than stock throttle-body injection.

Mated to a stock automatic transmission, the new engine was capable of moving the STE to 60 mph in 10.3 seconds.  The 2.5 OHC four, with balance shaft, was not only smoother and more powerful than the Iron Duke but could also be produced on Pontiac’s production line, reportedly at an added cost of only $45 per engine.

There were a lot of [Pontiac] guys, who considered this a real alternative to the Quad 4, which was an unnecessarily expensive engine to produce, and were being strongly encouraged to accept.
