11989 Ford Probe LX Test Drive
The results of Ford’s collaboration with Mazda, the Probe had a lot of charm. It was based on the Mazda MX6 with new styling that perhaps a bit over done, although it remained faithful to the variety of experimental styling exercises that Ford did under the name. The base model engine provided efficient go power so the Turbo was not really necessary. The Turbo did have lots of go power, but as with the MX6, the front end posed some problems in transmitting that power. The passenger area was large and practical except for the trunk access.
Probe was officially launched in North America on May 12, 1988. Originally, Ford had intended to replace the venerable Mustang with the Probe. However, the Mustang’s continued sales success and its numerous fans dissuaded Ford and from pulling the Mustang off market. With Mazda involved in both the design and construction, the Probe was a car with an abundance of charm and good features. Ford now could sell a “Made in the USA”… product Japanese style…
