Poor old Isuzu. Despite really decent product, despite an incredibly clever ad campaign, it merely plodded along in the U.S. market. Dismal names like I-Mark andP’UP may have had something to do with that, but lackluster styling and performance didn’t help, either.
Now in its last year on the market, the I-Mark gained a new twin-cam engine that would live on in the car’s 1990’s successor, and it was a winner. This engine gave the 1989 I-Mark RS subcompact a place on the short list of any serious driver who wanted fun with practicality in their runabout. And with an out the door price of under ten grand, there was no need to worry much about the the cost.
