Introduced in 1982 as an 1983 model, Mitsubishi’s soldier in the burgeoning sport utility battle was the 2-door Montero, with a 2.6 liter inline four that generated 105 hp and 139 lb-ft of torque. Moderately successful in 2-door trim, Mitsubishi kept roughly the same formula for the following six years. But sometimes it takes more than two doors to please a family, so for 1989 Mitsubishi extended the overall length a whopping 28 inches over the base 2-door, dropping in its proven 3-liter V6, adding two more doors, and delivered to its dealers the kind of transportation light truck users had been waiting for since the first cannon was fired in the SUV wars.
