Mitsubishi’s sleeper, the Starion, was about to wake up and roar. Like the Diamond Star Eclipse/Laser/Talon, the next Starion and Chrysler Conquest was a joint Chrysler-Mitsubishi design and would be sold under both corporate banners, although all of the mechanical bits were clearly Mitsubishi’s. The 2nd gen two-plus-two, known as the 90R would feature side ducts and a very low hoodline. The smooth shape registered a possible Cd of 0.29; the car’s length, width, and height were nearly those of the contemporary Nissan 300ZX. The engine would have been a 24-valve quad-cam iteration of the Mitsubishi 3.0L V6. The first batch would be normally aspirated, producing around 222; the later addition of twin turbos would raise output to around 300. The Starion would retain its rear wheel drive layout, but full time AWD would be standard in the twin-turbo car. If any of this information sounds familiar, it should. But instead of a Chrysler variant, we got a Dodge.
