1989: Oldsmobile’s Cal Trofeo
Taking a cue from the Mercedes customizer AMG, Oldsmobile designers at the GM Advanced Concept Center in Southern California took a Trofeo luxury coupe down the same path for this one-off concept-car. The California Trofeo, displayed at the L.A. and Chicago auto shows, was a custom job fully finished in appearance, and designed to be ready to go at the drop of the General’s signal. The front end was a peculiar blend of unusual F-14 air intakes and show-car aero. Oldsmobile said the intakes were functional, the upper set ducting air to the engine inter-cooler and the bottom set to engine cooling. The concept Trofeo’s engine offered greater reality. It was Oldsmobile’s intercooled and turbocharged Quad4 producing between 195-250 hp. A 5-speed manual trans-axle changed the gears in this show car, though it was knonw that any GM trans-axle purported to withstand such an engine torque was wildly experimental, at best.

Thank you for this find! I remember this , but to see it here brings the memories back to me. It is funny what we forget until we see it again. I wonder what kind of hit this vehicle would have been?
i love the hidden lights. they eventually made it!
