The biggest news for Chrysler in 1989 was the introduction of the A-cars, Plymouth Acclaim and Dodge Spirit.  Yet another variant on the discontinued K-car, the Acclaim grafted an additional 3-in. onto the wheelbase, adding to the Reliant’s already generous rear leg room and bumping the car into the mid-size EPA interior-volume class.  A variety of engines were offered, including the optional 150-hp Turbo I and Mitsubishi’s 141-hp 3-liter OHC V-6.  The Acclaim was available in three trim levels, base, LE, or LX. The upper levels added such items as a 45/55 split folding rear seat, all cloth bucket seats, and stainless steel wheel trim; the top line LX also tacked on a rear luggage rack.  The base and LE Acclaims rolled out on 14-inch wheel and tires while the luxury model LX sported 15’s.  Aimed at the Corsica, Tempo, Grand Am, and Accord, these Chrysler additions boasted more interior volume than any of the competition with comparable exterior dimensions.
