1990: Dodge Originally Planned to Share the ZJ Platform for the First Durango?
Iacocca, Lutz, and company began finalizing Chrysler’s product plans through the mid-1990s, although several issues were unresolved, notably funding and sourcing. To shave costs, Chrysler was discussing joint ventures with Mitsubishi, Fiat and Peugeot.
On the truck front, Dodge was considering a companion utility to accompany the larger upcoming Jeep Grand Cherokee that debuted in 1992 as a 93 model. This image was published in 1990, prior to Dodge changing its design language, so it is quite interesting to see the styling direction that was projected in the media so early on.
At least one full-size mockup was done. Front end treatment was a lot more conservative, but the vertical door handles sure weren’t!
