Explorer, a new nameplate from Ford Motor Co., was the latest addition to a family of work vehicles with an indisputable reputation for being tough. Over the decades Ford trucks have demonstrated the ability to get the job done no matter what the conditions. What’s different about the Explorer was the unprecedented level of comfort and convenience features, such as a leather interior or a compact disc player, that in the past were only available in cars. This combination of tough and tender made the two and four door Explorers ideally suited to any get up and go outdoor lifestyle, Ford maintained. Explorer models provided an attractive alternative to either a conventional passenger car or a mundane work truck. These vehicles were equally at home in the valet parking lot at the country club or camping on top of your favorite mountain. They represented the best combination yet produced by Ford of the popular attributes of both car and truck worlds.
